This is Annie Proulx's debut novel which was eclipsed by The Shipping News. It is an alluring, dark contemplation of loneliness and forgiveness. Her character, Loyal Blood, is alienated and on the run from an awful mistake. Loyal's haunting past and long journey towards redemption is an absorbing story. Annie's writing is luminous with small details and alive with intelligence.
